The vineyard portions in the Munti area where clonal selections of Inzolia have been planted combine with those in the Milici area where we find some Chardonnay vineyards that benefit from soil with a medium structure and a good proportion of calcareous skeleton, allowing for greater verticality and a strong acidic backbone, essential for creating high-quality Metodo Classico wines like Milazzo Classico Spumante Brut Bio. A FAMILY STORY For the Milazzo family, producing wine is a true "family matter" that made them the first producers of sparkling wines with the classic method in Sicily. A path that continues in the name of enhancing the company tradition, with Giuseppina Milazzo and Saverio Lo Leggio, a couple in life, united in the desire to ensure the continuity of the Milazzo production. Among the first Sicilian winemakers, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, to enhance the vinification from indigenous Sicilian grape varieties. This has allowed over the years, along with other excellent names, to recover the island's winemaking tradition without neglecting experimentation and innovation, which has led, among other things, to the adoption of Chardonnay grapes in Sicily with the precise intention of producing a great Sicilian Metodo Classico sparkling wine. A SUSTAINABLE COMPANY: Certifications ISO and Organic Being a sustainable company means accepting the challenge of continuous change, working well today to produce better tomorrow. It is currently also engaged in a program for analyzing the carbon footprint across the entire production chain. Thus we want to guarantee the quality of our work through a path that effectively combines low environmental impact cultivation techniques and innovation in the various stages of production of our wines and Metodo Classico sparkling wines. Our Steps Towards SUSTAINABILITY Early '900 – Maria Costanza – family ancestor – a strong-willed woman, dedicated herself personally to grape cultivation and winemaking; she oversaw all stages of processing. A small winery in Campobello di Licata, but even then, the wine produced was highly appreciated by local customers. In the post-war years, the production of wine grapes was complemented by table grape production. By the end of the 1960s, new vineyards for winemaking replaced table grape cultivation, thus beginning a new phase in the family history. Azienda Agricola G. Milazzo was born not simply to make wine and become a profitable business but especially to be a company dedicated to the obsessive search for quality and continuous improvement. 1982: registration of the "Martin Pescatore" trademark, which had already been used, in the post-war years and until the early 1960s, for marketing table grapes in international markets. 2004: first certification: UNI ENI ISO 14001 for the activation of the Environmental Management System 2007: the long-implemented choice not to use synthetic chemical substances begins to be certified. This year marks the beginning of the mandatory conversion period that will lead to organic product certification, which will conclude in 2012. 2008: UNI EN ISO 9001 certification for the Quality Management System and UNI EN ISO 22005 for the Traceability of the production chain, which starts from fertilizations, to pruning and all work in the vineyards, to the production of wines in the cellar, up to delivery to customers. 2012: organic certification, which represented the goal and at the same time the new starting point of our production journey that opens us to new challenges. Our Martin Pescatore brand is accompanied by the European organic brand. A path started in 2007 and completed in 2012, with the achievement of the definitive certificate (Certificate No. 2500/I rev. 02). A commitment that concerns not only our 75 hectares of vineyards but the entire Milazzo estate, which today counts approximately 110 overall hectares. Each single parcel of the company, even if not cultivated, is already certified or in the process of "conversion" to ORGANIC CERTIFICATION. A fundamental choice. The only one that allows us, for the future, to continue planting vineyards in accordance with our motto: We guarantee the genuineness of our wines. 2013: a new challenge arises. The challenge to reduce CO2 (carbon) emissions at every stage of production (from the field to the consumer). We thus decided to join the Ita.Ca protocol for the development of a carbon footprint calculation tool, an international “calculator”, already used in Italy, Australia, California, and New Zealand, specifically adapted to the Italian production model of vine and wine by researchers and technicians from the SATA group and the University of Milan, in collaboration with Australian colleagues. 2013: participation in the public tender issued by the Ministry of the Environment for the analysis of the carbon footprint in consumer goods. Another completed step. Today we are among the 95 Italian companies from various production sectors and the only Sicilian wine company admitted to the program. (http://www.minambiente.it/pagina/il-bando-pubblico-2013) 2014: doing business while consuming and polluting less represents a complex challenge both scientifically and organizationally. But we are, first and foremost, men and women of the land and we are convinced that we have one choice: to protect the environment so that it can continue to give us healthy and good fruits. As part of the Ministry's project, we are now engaged in obtaining the ISO/TS 14067 Carbon footprint product certification (Certification system for the methodology for quantifying the product carbon footprint), which will validate the method we are using to collect and analyze data on our CO2 emissions to then identify the best technical solutions for effectively reducing our "Carbon footprint".
