The Freiherr Merlot Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2019 from Cantina Merano is a spicy, full-bodied red wine with excellent ageing potential, capable of competing with the great names in its circle. On old vines sheltered at the foot of Montefranco, small-berry grapes of the highest quality and excellent phenolic ripeness thrive. The spur-pruned cordon-trained vines are worked by hand, and the grapes are individually selected. Only a few bunches, those with the smallest berries, remain on the vines. The hand-picked bunches then mature in new and used barriques to create a truly outstanding wine. Soils: light, permeable and of glacial origin. Vine age: 15 years. Winemaking: fermentation takes place in contact with the skins for approximately 10–15 days, followed by biological malolactic fermentation. After 16 months of ageing in barriques and oak barrels, the wine is bottled.
